What it is
Bank auto-debit, also called direct debit, lets a lender collect each installment from a borrower's bank account on the agreed day, after the borrower has given a standing approval.
The approval belongs to one loan. It names your institution, the account the money lands in, the most that can be taken at a time and in total, and when it ends. The borrower can cancel it at any time.
It suits salaried and business borrowers who keep money in a bank. Members who pay in cash or by mobile money carry on as before; one loan book holds all three.
Who does what
Three parties take part, and the money never touches Rejesho. It goes from the borrower's account to your institution's own account, at the bank.
| Party | Holds | Does |
|---|---|---|
| Your institution | The collection account and the agreement with the bank | Decides who is offered auto-debit and what happens when a deduction fails |
| The bank | The borrower's approval and both accounts | Moves the money and tells Rejesho whether each deduction succeeded |
| Rejesho | Instructions, results and the ledger. Never money | Sends each instruction on the due day, posts the repayment and sends the receipt |
| The borrower | Their own account and the right to cancel | Approves once on the bank's own screen and can stop it at any time |

What the borrower sees
When a loan officer offers auto-debit, the borrower gets an SMS with a link to approve. The page is in Swahili first and shows your institution's name, the installment, the most per deduction, the most in total and the end date.
They approve on the bank's own screen: NMB's page for NMB, the SimBanking app for CRDB. Rejesho never asks for a PIN or a one-time code, and nobody at your institution should ever ask for one.
- Each deduction is followed by an SMS receipt from your institution.
- The approval can never take more than the loan.
- The borrower can cancel at any time, through their bank or by calling your institution.
- When the loan is cleared, the approval ends.
Fees
Rejesho does not charge per deduction. Bank and provider fees are agreed between your institution and them.
| Fee | Amount | Paid by |
|---|---|---|
| ClickPesa CRDB Direct Debit activation | TZS 250,000, once | Your institution, to ClickPesa |
| ClickPesa CRDB Direct Debit collection | 2% of each collection | Your institution, to ClickPesa |
| NMB direct debit | Set by NMB when it opens | To be agreed with NMB |

When a deduction fails
A deduction that fails posts nothing. The installment stays due and the ledger stays true.
- Not enough money: Rejesho tries again on the next working day, then in your salary window, up to the number of attempts you set.
- Approval cancelled or expired: auto-debit stops for that loan and the deduction appears in Collections, Member payments. Collect with a collector or by mobile money.
- Anything a machine cannot settle waits in Collections, Member payments, for a branch manager to resolve.
- Arrears and late fees run exactly as they do for any other loan.
Security and privacy
- Rejesho never sees or stores a borrower's PIN or one-time code.
- Account numbers and approvals are stored encrypted and shown masked.
- Every change is recorded in the audit log: who, when and what.
- Each institution sees only its own borrowers.
- Your institution is the data controller for its borrowers and Rejesho processes data on its behalf, under the Personal Data Protection Act 2022.
Regulation checklist for lenders
- Register with the Personal Data Protection Commission as a data controller (Personal Data Protection Act 2022).
- Write the deductions into the loan contract, in Swahili or English (Bank of Tanzania Financial Consumer Protection Regulations 2019).
- Give fourteen days' written notice before any recovery action (Microfinance Regulations 2019, GN 679, Regulation 56).
- Keep your TAMFI or TAMIU membership current.
- A direct debit approval is a standing authority the borrower may revoke (TACH Rules 2016).
This is general information, not legal advice. Confirm with your lawyer and the Bank of Tanzania.
Questions to ask your bank
Ask in writing, and keep the answers with your board papers.
- Does NMB offer direct debit collection to a non-bank Tier 2 lender? What is the product called?
- How does the borrower approve (branch form, NMB Mkononi, USSD), and how do they cancel?
- May Rejesho send instructions on our behalf as our technology provider?
- Is it by API or by file? Where is the specification, and is there a test environment?
- What are the fees: setup, per deduction, and per failed deduction?
- When a deduction fails, which reasons does NMB return, and when?
- How is the account statement delivered, and does it carry the borrower's payment reference?
Questions lenders ask
Does Rejesho ever hold our money?
No. Every deduction goes from the borrower's account to your institution's account at the bank. Rejesho only sends the instruction and records the result.
Can a borrower stop the deductions?
Yes, at any time, through their bank or by calling your institution. The loan stays due and you collect it another way.
Can our loan officer enter the borrower's code to save time?
No. The approval is given by the borrower on the bank's own screen. A staff member typing a borrower's code would be sharing their credentials, which Rejesho never allows.
How much can be taken at a time?
The approval sets the most per deduction and the most in total, worked out from the frozen loan terms. It can never take more than the loan.
What does it cost the borrower?
Rejesho charges the borrower nothing. Their bank may apply its own account charges; ask your bank and tell your borrowers.
What happens when a loan is cleared early?
The approval ends when the loan is cleared, and no further deductions are made.
Can members on the same loan book pay in different ways?
Yes. Cash, mobile money and bank auto-debit post to the same ledger, and the day sheet shows each method separately.
When will NMB auto-debit be available?
When NMB opens direct debit to non-bank lenders. Rejesho's side is built. Start your NMB application now so the bank's approval is not the step you wait for.
Can we use CRDB through ClickPesa today?
ClickPesa runs it today. The connection inside Rejesho is being built. You can open your ClickPesa account and finish its checks now.
